Postgraduate Program of Pure Mathematics

Pure mathematics is the core and fundamental component of science of mathematics, which includes such sub-branch disciplines as mathematical logic, number theory, algebra, topology, theory of functions, functional analysis and differential equation, etc. There comes obviously deeper interaction and penetration among these sub-branch disciplines along with the fast development of modern mathematics that arouse many brand new research areas and study emphases. Basic mathematics, not only the basis for other applied mathematical disciplines, but also serves as the necessary language, tool and methods for nature science, technical science and social science. Therefore, a much broader application prospect of basic mathematics research is provided in light of the development of high technologies as well as the extensive use of computers. This program, launched by Schoolof Mathematicsof SWJTU, comprises a team of 10 professors and 5 associate professors, which features with very solid academic foundation together with imaginative innovation. Many of them have the experience of study, visit and lecturing in theU.S.,Germany, theU.K.,France,Italy,Spainand Canada, meanwhile, a broad range of collaborative relation has been bridged between SWJTU and other research institutions and famous universities. The department is equipped with research institutions like Statistics Consultancy Center, Mathematics Laboratory, etc. In the past 3 years, the department has undertaken 2 NSFC projects, 1 program funded by Ministry of Education, 8 provincial programs. It has been funded with over 800,000RMB, and more than 90 theses were released including 15 retrievals of SCI, EI, ISTP. The department has also won the Zhan Tianyou Railway Science and Technology Award and the World Chinese Science and Technology Award. The cultivation requirements for students of this program are, through systemic theory study and scientific research in practice, to be capable of independently engaging in scientific research with solid mathematical basis and broad range of knowledge that is suitable to work in the fields of application research and teaching in research institutions and universities, or to join in the research ,development, management and computer application work at large and medium enterprises, companies, governmental institutions, industry and commerce, banks, securities industry or insurance companies.

Postgraduate Program of Probability and Statistics

This program mainly focuses on the mathematical problems aroused in stability, maintainability and security of high-speed railway equipment via theory of random processes. The emphasis of study is mathematical modeling and theory analysis based on reliability theory. The target of the program is to penetrate the application of science of mathematics into the significant areas of current researches on rail transportation, merging the two disciplines deeply together. It is also aimed at, with utilization of stochastic analysis and probability limit theory, the research on mathematical modeling in economic and financial industries. The research and result related could support the financial market both theoretically and technically. The program involves primarily the theoretical research and application of nonlinear time series analysis.

Postgraduate Program of Applied Mathematics

The postgraduate program in Applied Mathematics is a key discipline of Sichuan provincial level, comprised of 10 professors and 10 associate professors. Each year nearly 20 postgraduate students are enrolled to continue study in the fields of intelligent information processing, optimal control and decision, cryptology and applied functional analysis, etc. In the past 3 years the department has undertaken more than 10 research projects such as 4 NSFC projects, the 9 Provincial Programs, etc., funded with over 1,000,000RMB. An integrated research team of production, study and research  has been founded that achieved 2 national patent programs, released over 200 theses with 23 retrievals of SCI, EI, ISTP, published 3 monographs including one by the famous Spring-Verlag Press. Many of the team members have the experience of study, visit and lecturing in theU.S.,Germany, theU.K.,France,Italy,SpainandCanada, meanwhile, a broad range of collaborative relation has been bridged between SWJTU and other research institutions and famous universities. The program aims at the cultivation of specialized personnel, equipped with basic theory and methods of science of mathematics, the ability to solve problems in practice with mathematical knowledge and computer, and trained of scientific research capacity, who are capable of working in the fields of research, teaching at technical, educational and economic departments, or of the engagement in application development and management at manufacturing and management departments. Students of this program are mainly trained of basic theories and methods in mathematics and applied mathematics, as well as mathematical modeling, computer and mathematical software. They are qualified to engage in research, development, management and computer application work at related large medium enterprises, companies, governmental institutions, industry and commerce, banks, securities industry or insurance companies, with good scientific literacy along with primary abilities to conduct researches and teaching, to solve problems in practice and to develop software.
